The Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy put New Zealand on the map. The film talent was obvious but the amazing scenery is what really made New Zealand stand out. 10 years on and we still receive tens of thousands of international vistors each year to experience a little piece of NZ for themselves.
Short of taking a scenic flight in the South Island, Hobbiton is the next best thing. These quirky underground houses are the real houses that were used to make both the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit movies.
Set amongst Farmland in Waikato, these cute cottages actually existed before the movies were made. While they were a film set, there is nothing fake about them. they are as they look - underground houses set amongst a country setting.
The complex is called Hobitton and you can actually tour through the actual houses where the movies were filmed. Be a hobbit for a day and take all the photos you want :)
This attraction is popular so you need to book ahead. There are varying levels of the tour from budget to a fully guided experience. Located 45 minutes East of Hamilton, the Hobbiton set is located amongst the rolling hillside of the Waikato.
