Te Awa The Base is Hamilton's largest and newest mall. Completed in 2010, the Te Rapa-based mall is not only a top shopping destination, but is a landmark in of itself. Te Awa does not carry the design of your typical mall. It looks beautiful outside and in, and at night the whole thing lights up with amazing coloured panels, that make it look like some kind of sculpture. The complex is striking and was designed with cultural elements of the Waikato's Tainui people.
The mall has every major NZ retailer and fast food chain, the fanciest movie theatres ever and free parking. Hoyts Cinemas are the anchor tenant and their movie theatres and foyer is the best around. Te Awa is also home to a large "home and garden themed" outdoor mall with shops like Mitre 10 Mega.
Te Awa is currently New Zealand's largest shopping centre. With the way new malls are popping up all the time, this reign may not last long, but Te Awa is certainly worthy of the crown. Personally, its the best mall I've ever seen.
Hundreds of Stores
Almost 200 stores offer almost anything you could dream off. High end clothing and jewellery, through to hardware and tools at Mitre 10 Mega. Te Awa's large tenants include Hoyts Cinemas, Farmers, Dress Mart, Mitre 10 Mega, The Warehouse, and Dick Smith. Boutique clothing and gift stores are everywhere, alongside an elaborate food court. The mall consists of two distinct areas: Multi level retail inside, and large outdoor area with the big box stores. See our Store Directory below.
Hoyts Cinemas Te Awa
Movies are a super special experience at Te Awa, the whole place is like a spaceship. The most comfortable movie seats await you, with the worlds largest snack bar (probably). The toilets are from another world! Screens the size of Imax. Not the average, boring movies experience!
Parking is never a problem at Te Awa The Base. A massive 3000 car parks mean that you'll never waste time looking for a space. The Hoyts underground car park has sensors for each car park so they can tell when spaces are full. A thoughtful LED display highlights exactly how many car parks are available and in which row. Above each undercover park is an LED light so you can easily look down a row and spot an empty park. Genius.
Outdoors, well there are car parks for miles. The outdoor big box stores have parking right outside their doors. Although with the size of the mall, you might want to shift your car twice during your trip if you are planning to do outdoors and indoor stores. Or just accept the forced exercise while shopping :)
Kids are certainly taken care of at Te Awa Mall. There is a large outdoor kids area with a covered playground. 7 days a week. Occasionally there is even a merry go round, and bouncy castle - all free. Right opposite the kids area are all the kids stores from T&T Childrenswear to the Baby Factory. Why not get Dad to watch the kids at the playground while you nip over to Dress Mart.
Home and Garden
Everything for the home and garden is catered for at The Base Te Rapa. Ae we mentioned, Mitre 10 Mega is an imposing figure in the corner. Get all your DIY supplies in one place. For the Home there are the usual suspects from the Warehouse to Briscoes. Godfreys, Dick Smith, Noel Leeming and Heathcotes 100% Appliances have you covered for electronics and home appliances.
A big part of mall shopping is of course fashion. Literally dozens of top name brands will have your credit card crying for mercy! It's all about selection, and now Hamilton has choice similar to Auckland. Supre, Sunglass Hut, Valley Girl, Witchery, Overland, North Beach, Glasson, Forever New, Barkers. Need I go on...
The best place to get discount prices on big name clothing brands. Dress Mart has always been a mecca of fashion. Located in a separate building beside the mall, you can park right outside. This is great because your feet will hurt after checking out all the stores. The Bendon outlet is a big attraction with discount underwear and lingerie.
If you are into the outdoors then you might be a little overwhelmed with all the great camping and outdoors stores. Kathmandu, Macpac, and Mountain Designs offer thousands of products to help you conquer nature. It's always worth popping in to each store, as there are always competing sales going on.
