Centre Place is Hamilton's premier shopping centre. You can expect upmarket, boutique-style shopping, with top names in fashion, footwear and homewares. Often you've needed to travel to Auckland to get access to popular fashion brands, but Centre Place has an amazing selection of local and international retail brands.
The complex was originally built in 1994, and called Downtown Plaza. Over the years the centre was expanded several times. In October 2013 the mall underwent a $47 million transformation. There were 42 new stores added, bringing the total to almost 100. The anchor tenant is Farmers, and their new premises are even larger than their previous location down the road.
The buildings and interiors are simply stunning. Modern, contemporary design sets this complex apart from your standard shopping centre. Also new is the Metro by Hoyts movie theatre. More about this below.
Centre Place is the central city's answer to Te Awa 'The Base'. The Te Rapa-based shopping centre on the edge of town is currently NZ's largest mall. It has attracted customers away from the central city in the past few years. Te Base also has an amazing Movie complex. Centre Place has answered back with digital theatre in a stylish setting.
Metro is a new cinema concept by Hoyts. Luxury is the name of the game, and rivals the Te Awa cinemas in design. Centre Place also includes the Lido Arthouse cinema complex.
The Centre Place redevelopment is a major one, and offers new stores that aren't found anywhere else in Hamilton. Now there is a reason to stay in the city, for some say, even better shopping than The Base. You be the judge!
