Dates: 20,21 - 27, 28 Feb 2016
The Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival is one of the main highlights on the Waikato Festival calendar. Held at Hamilton Gardens, the two week event encompasses over 70 shows. Hamilton Gardens is the perfect location for such an event with beautiful surroundings to match the artistic fliar on offer. The Gardens also have lots of different themed gardens and areas such as the Rhododendron lawn and the Lakeside stage.
You can expect all kinds of performance arts from jazz and blues, to dance performances and comedy. Theatre performances are a big hit alongside the outdoor film festival. There are children's performances and the popular Readers and Writers Festival. Did we mention the Teddybear's Picnic? The Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival is aimed at the whole family, but there are some adult-oriented events such as 'Laugh at the Gardens' with some of NZ's top comedians.
The New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards are held during the festival, as well as various visual art displays. Maori art and culture play a big role with Kapa Haka perfomances and guided walk throughs of the Gardens with a Maori perspective. The entire event is a visual feat of the senses, and a great way to celebrate local arts.
Most events are free. In previous festivals there were up to 70 events, with 40 being free. Many of the paid events are around $10 which makes for a free or very cheap day out for the family.
