The central Hamilton Library also houses the Heritage Collection which keeps records on Hamilton's history. There are thousands of photographs, documents and publications all on Hamilton. There are even maps of Hamilton dating back to the 1800s. From the 1940's there are aerial photos of Waikato showing the growth of the region.

There are also a large number of historical books on Hamilton and New Zealand as a whole. The heritage collection really is a treasure trove of local Hamilton history.
About Hamilton Public Library
The Hamilton Public Library has been serving the local community for over 125 years. The library association was formed around 1870 and had its fair share of knock-backs in that time including burned buildings, stolen library funds and unpaid rents. The library was housed in the purpose built Carnegie Library for many decades. After outgrowing several spaces around the city over the years, the library moved to its current location on Garden Place in 1993.
